Minnesota Zoo Built Safe Walkways with an Uponor Snow Melt System
Installed in 2015, the Uponor snow and ice melting system at the Minnesota Zoo enables safe, year-round accessibility for guests by eliminating the need for constant snow removal. Designed to withstand harsh Minnesota winters, the hydronic system continues to help the zoo maintain consistent operations while protecting guests, staff, and infrastructure, even after more than a decade of use.
Customer Challenge
Keep outdoor pathways safe and accessible for guests and staff year-round with a solution that offers convenience, efficiency, and reliability
Uponor Solutions
A reliable, low-maintenance solution, the Uponor snow and ice melting system supports guest and employee safety by continuously removing surface snow and ice that can cause slips and falls. The automated operation eliminates the need for plowing, salting, and shoveling, which reduces labor and equipment costs while ensuring consistent access to walkways, even in extreme winter conditions
Sustainability
By minimizing the use of salt and chemicals, the radiant system also helps protect landscaping, extend the life of the concrete and surfaces, and directly supports the zoo's environmental and sustainability goals.
Additional Projects
Uponor has been chosen for additional needs around the zoo, including radiant heating in the Komodo Dragon Habitat, installed in 1994, designed to mimic their natural environment with multiple zones.
